What is Utrogestan?

Utrogestan is a body-identical progesterone used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for individuals who still have a womb. It is made from plant sources and is chemically identical to the progesterone your body naturally produces.

When you take oestrogen as part of HRT, it can cause the lining of the womb (endometrium) to thicken. Utrogestan balances this effect, helping to keep the lining healthy and reducing the risk of endometrial cancer.

Utrogestan is usually prescribed alongside oestrogen in either a cyclical (monthly) or continuous (daily) regimen, depending on your stage of menopause. If you’ve had a hysterectomy, you typically won’t need it.

Why choose Utrogestan?

Utrogestan is part of the body-identical HRT group, meaning it matches the hormones your body naturally produces. It’s often preferred over synthetic progestogens for several reasons:

  • Body-identical and plant-derived, making it a more natural option
  • Fewer side effects for many women compared to synthetic progestogens
  • May improve sleep quality, especially when taken at night
  • Less likely to affect mood, with some women reporting a calming effect
  • Well tolerated, even by those who have struggled with other types of HRT

Utrogestan may be especially suitable if:

  • You want a body-identical HRT
  • You’ve experienced mood swings or side effects on synthetic progestogens
  • You are perimenopausal or postmenopausal and still have your womb
  • Guidance from the British Menopause Society or NICE, increasingly recommends body-identical HRT options.discreet and adaptable option that fits into your daily routine

Benefits of Utrogestan

While Utrogestan doesn’t directly treat menopause symptoms (that’s the role of oestrogen), it plays a crucial role in protecting the womb for those using oestrogen-based HRT. When used correctly, it:

1 Helps maintain a healthy endometrial lining
2 May support better sleep and reduced anxiety, particularly when taken at night
3 Is generally well tolerated and preferred by many for its natural profile
